Some believe that Long Island Iced Tea was first served in the late 1970s by a bartender nicknamed Rosebud Butt. He worked in an inn in the town of Babylon, Long Island, New York which is where the name comes from.

Others prefer the Tennessee version which claims that Long Island Iced Tea first surfaced in a community called Long Island in Kingsport, Tennessee in the 1920’s. As that story goes, Old Man Bishop passed the recipe to his son Ransom, who perfected it in the 1940’s. Supposedly because of the secrecy that was required during prohibition, along with the smugglers, gangsters and undercover agents, its consumption was kept low key. Although it was common at that time to disguise cocktails as non-alcoholic drinks, there is no real fact to the Tennessee claim that Long Island Iced Tea originated there. Regardless whether you think the drink originated in 1920 or 1970, one thing is clear.
